If you already own a domain, you can use it with your SMWS hosting account. This usually means connecting your domain to your hosting by updating your nameservers or DNS records with your current domain provider.
Steps to use your existing domain
-
Order your SMWS hosting plan.
-
Choose the option that says you already own a domain.
-
Enter your domain name during checkout.
-
Complete your order.
-
Update your domain settings with your domain registrar if needed.
Two common ways to connect your domain
You will usually connect your domain in one of these ways:
Option 1: Update nameservers
This points your domain fully to your SMWS hosting account and is the most common setup.
Option 2: Update DNS records
This keeps your domain registered where it is now while pointing specific records, such as your website, to your hosting account.
Before you make changes
Make sure you have:
-
Access to the account where your domain is registered
-
The correct nameservers or DNS records provided by SMWS
-
Your hosting account active and ready
After you update your domain
Once changes are made, it may take time for them to fully update across the internet. During that time:
-
Your website may not load right away
-
Email may continue using old settings until propagation finishes
-
Some visitors may see the old version for a short time
Notes
Using a domain you already own does not require transferring it to SMWS unless you want all domain management in one place. You can keep your domain where it is and still use our hosting.
