What Nameservers Should I Use?

If you are pointing your domain to SMWS hosting, you will need to use the correct nameservers provided with your hosting account. Nameservers tell your domain where to find your website and related hosting services.

Where to find your nameservers

Your nameservers are usually provided in one of these places:

  1. Your hosting welcome email

  2. Your client area service details

  3. A support message from SMWS

Typical setup process

  1. Log in to the account where your domain is registered.

  2. Open the domain management settings.

  3. Find the nameserver section.

  4. Replace the current nameservers with the nameservers provided by SMWS.

  5. Save your changes.

Important note about nameservers

You should only use the nameservers assigned to your hosting setup. Using the wrong nameservers can prevent your website and email from working correctly.

If you are not sure which nameservers to use

Check your welcome email or hosting details first. If you still are not sure, contact support before making changes.

What happens after updating nameservers

After you save the new nameservers:

  • Your domain will begin pointing to your SMWS hosting

  • Website changes may take time to appear

  • DNS propagation may take some time to complete across the internet

Notes

Nameservers are different from DNS records. Changing nameservers usually hands over full DNS control for the domain to the hosting provider.
