To use your domain with SMWS hosting, you need to point it to your hosting account. This is usually done by updating your domain’s nameservers or DNS settings with the company where your domain is registered.
Two ways to point your domain
There are two common ways to connect your domain to SMWS hosting:
Option 1: Change nameservers
This is the easiest and most complete option for most customers. It points your domain fully to your SMWS hosting account.
Option 2: Change DNS records
This option lets you keep DNS control where your domain is currently registered while pointing only certain records, such as your website, to SMWS hosting.
How to point your domain using nameservers
-
Log in to the account where your domain is registered.
-
Find the domain management or DNS settings area.
-
Choose the option to change nameservers.
-
Replace the current nameservers with the nameservers provided by SMWS.
-
Save your changes.
How to point your domain using DNS records
-
Log in to your domain registrar or DNS provider.
-
Open the DNS management area for your domain.
-
Update the required DNS records using the values provided by SMWS.
-
Save your changes.
What happens next
After you make changes, your domain will begin updating across the internet. During this period:
-
Your website may not load right away
-
Some visitors may still see the old site for a while
-
Email settings may not fully update immediately
Before you begin
Make sure:
-
Your hosting account is active
-
You have the correct nameservers or DNS records from SMWS
-
You can log in to the account where your domain is managed
Notes
Nameserver and DNS changes are not always instant. It can take time for the internet to recognize the new settings.
